Winter 2026 Edition

There’s a sense we’re turning a corner — or at least seeing a shift in momentum against the tide of housing unaffordability across the country.

Two reforms stand out. The proposed changes to Negative Gearing and Capital Gains Tax have been welcomed across the sector, including by those of us who’ve campaigned against this distortion for years. And the Hometime campaign’s win on the “youth penalty” will help around 4,000 young people into community housing.

We have also welcomed the long awaited national housing plan Homes for Australia. All levels of government now seem to recognise that decades of under-investment in social housing have eroded the safety net Australians have long relied on. The plan coordinates efforts across government, community organisations, and private industry to address the nation’s housing crisis. It shows we all have a role to play.

For our part, South Port has been quietly building stronger foundations — sticking to fundamentals and supporting people with complex needs that others might avoid. It’s costly and carries higher risk, placing real strain on our staff and our operating revenue. But we believe our specialised, tailored approach works — and that it can scale, with the right partners.

What’s been genuinely uplifting is the support from new partners who see and value our work in the community — and the remarkable generosity of individuals helping to turn the tide. Thanks to recent support in our EOFY campaign, we’re now 40% of the way to our goal of funding two more years of our social meals program (pictured below). We have some exciting plans under wraps also which we’ll share in coming months. Please consider a donation if you can, tax deductible in the 25-26FY in the next two weeks.
