Building homes

In 2011, with the support of Father Bob Maguire, architect Nonda Katsilidis, and the Victorian Office of Housing, we were successful in obtaining a Federal Nation Building grant to construct 40 one-bedroom apartments on land owned by the Catholic Church in Bank Street, South Melbourne.

Designed by award winning Melbourne architects, Design Inc., the development features passive cooling features, water tanks for toilet flushing, and solar boosted hot water. The one-bedroom flats, of 50 square metres, have been tenanted by long term South Port tenants who had been living in rooming houses.

We worked closely with the architects, project managers, Davis Langdon, and builder, Arrow International to achieve a block of 40 one-bedroom apartments we are proud of.

‘You’ve got two things that identify South Port Community Housing Group- the organisation’s sense of place and word ‘community’ in the name. These are the truths it is clear the organisation holds to be inviolable.’
